The process of text-making

The written texts of school study are about someone, something or some idea being, having or functioning in some manner, usually in sentences – otherwise the text would not exist. Therefore, pupils wanting to know more about how the text is functioning will want to be clear about the ‘subject(s)’ of the sentences (the someone, something or some idea) – which is that portion Keith includes in the ‘phrase generator’. They will also need to be able to explore what is happening, or being carried out to the subject, or what it is or has – that predicated section of the sentence (that bit included in the ‘clause generator’). How the phrases and clauses relate to each other, the way in which they are capable of making meaning of different sorts in different combinations, is the stuff of grammar teaching and learning.
